The raw stone is given an initial form, guided by the vision of the artist as he sees the final design locked within the stone. The traditional artists believe that the spirit of the piece is in the stone and there job is to release it.
Skilled hands give the stone its preliminary shape. The most difficult task is to carve out the center portion or the movement of the piece. Hammer and chisel are used to clear away the stone that hides the artist's vision of the finished work of art.
The sculpture begins to take on its final appearance as the artist uses a metal file to remove the rough areas of the surface of the stone. Again, the interior of the carvings requires much patience and skill. This piece will become an (Eternal Family Union), one of the most popular designs of the Zimbabwean artists.
Sandpaper, water, and many hours of patient sanding and rubbing bring the surface to a smooth finish. Much attention must be given to the interior elements of the design, so that even the smallest surfaces are a delight to the touch.
A wood fire is started, and the sculpture is heated to prepare it to receive the coats of wax that will bring the stone to its gleaming perfection.
The heated stone permits the wax to flow evenly over the entire sculpture. Polishing by patient hands brings out the hidden beauty of the stone. Several repetitions of waxing and polishing give the piece a high luster.
The finished sculpture is ready to find its way into a waiting home, where it will add its special qualities to inspire and uplift the spirit of all who live there. “Eternal Family Union” is a special theme that is eagerly accepted throughout the world.
